Our Seniors Connecting with the Community

Thursday, 14 September 2023
As we live in a relatively regional community on the South Coast, it is very important that we introduce our students to opportunities, experiences and people both inside and outside of our community.

In the past few weeks our Senior School students have been connecting with community in a number of ways.

We have had a local police officer present to our Year 10s about their life and experiences as a member of SAPOL. It was terrific for our Year 10s to hear from someone who really understands the job and could share his experiences with our students. Senior Constable Jamie Daniels, Talent Acquisition Section SA Police, is also a parent at the College and we really appreciated him taking the time out of his day to share with us.

Rotary Youth Driver Awareness Program

On Friday 9 September, Year 10 classes attended the Rotary Youth Driver Awareness (RYDA)course in Victor Harbor. RYDA is a community-based initiative of Rotary which aims to address the alarming number of deaths of young people on our roads. The program is further supported by Road Safety Education, who describe RYDA as the “heart of their programs.”  The program targets 15-17-year-old who are at the stage of their lives where they start to drive or ride in a vehicle driven by their peers.

RYDA is delivered to over 660 high schools throughout Australia and New Zealand, with an average of 40,000 students participating in the RYDA Program every year.

Investigator College students rotated through 6 short and interactive courses all aimed specifically for young drivers. These courses included; Road Choices, The I in Drive, Mind Matters, Drive SOS , Speed and Stopping and Crash Investigators. At times these courses were quite moving, but always informative. We also acknowledge our local Rotary volunteers who helped to organise the day, supported by local Police and driving instructors.

Our students were highly engaged in the day and despite the very poor weather commented on how much they enjoyed and learnt from RYDA.

Investigator College has attended this course for several years now as we firmly believe in the importance of helping to educate young drivers. In week 10, our Year 11 cohort will attend the RAA street smart young driver program to further educate young drivers.

Work Experience

In Week 10, our Year 10 students will be off in the working world as they enjoy a week of Work Experience. We have students in a significant range of employment experiences from SAPOL, child care, fishing vessels, interstate schooling, farming, corporate firms in the CBD, the South Adelaide Football Club and everything in between. We know this will be an incredible opportunity for our young people and we thank the many businesses who are supporting such a fantastic program.
