Beyond the classroom, these activities play a pivotal role in shaping well-rounded individuals, fostering skills and qualities that extend far beyond academic achievements.

Extra-curricular activities contribute to the holistic development of our students, nurturing their physical, social, and emotional well-being. Participating in sports and camps cultivates essential teamwork and collaboration skills. Whether it’s working together to achieve a common goal on a volleyball court or collaborating on a camp challenge, students learn the value of cooperation and mutual support, skills that are transferable to numerous aspects of their lives. In addition, extra-curricular activities provide opportunities for students to take on leadership roles and promotes physical fitness and overall well-being. Encouraging an active lifestyle from a young age not only supports students’ physical health but also contributes to improved focus, concentration, and mental well-being, positively impacting their academic performance.

I would like to particularly acknowledge our staff and Year 7 students for their engagement and enthusiasm on camp at Port Hughes in Week 5, as well as our Year 7 and 8 Girls and Boys volleyballers who finished 1st and 3rd, respectively, in the Volleyball State Knockout Championships.

Year 7 Camp Reflection

The Year 7 camp at Port Hughes offered a dynamic mix of outdoor activities and team-building experiences. Upon reaching the accommodation, we dove straight into a series of engaging challenges, including billy-cart racing, problem-solving, beach games, and cricket. The day was characterised by laughter and teamwork, establishing a positive atmosphere for the entire camp.

The following morning, our groups participated in various activities such as fishing, mountain biking, and enjoying the Splash Town water park. Cricket and volleyball remained constant fixtures, fostering team camaraderie and sportsmanship throughout our stay.

Evenings were filled with diverse activities, including a quiz night, an impromptu talent show, and Olympic-style rounds of challenges. Remarkably, students took charge of kitchen duties with great responsibility, showcasing impressive teamwork, dance moves and a notable absence of complaints.

On the final day, we visited the Moonta Mining Museum, delving into the mining history of the region. Students explored the area in a heritage-listed train ride around mine sites, gaining insights into the challenging working conditions of adults and children during that era. An interactive museum tour in the old school building added to the experience before we headed back to Victor Harbor.

During the journey home, as a group, we reflected on the camp, expressing gratitude for the lessons learned and the friendships forged. The camp proved to be more than just a getaway; it served as a platform for personal growth and strengthened teamwork skills among the Year 7 students.
