Wellbeing and Community Development – Mental Health Awareness
I was alerted last week to a Netflix production ‘13 Reasons Why’.
The series is a confronting and graphic portrayal of a young woman who commits suicide after outlining the 13 ‘reasons’ for her death. Some maintain the series provides a valuable mechanism with which to enter into discussion about suicide while others believe the show exposes viewers to disturbing imagery and suicide messages.
The production is aimed at young people and has divided opinion as to its usefulness with many wellbeing professionals urging ‘caution’ for parents and educators.
I have been made aware of several resources that are available:
- ‘How to talk to young people about ’13 Reasons Why’ – [Headspace School Support]
- Kirrilie Smout [Developing Minds] has a response at
- Geoffrey Ahern [Mental Health First Aid course] at
While acknowledging I have not viewed the program, I have received sufficient information to warrant highlighting this as a possible wellbeing concern for our young people.
Please contact me at the College should you require any further clarification/information.
