Investigator College recognises this and has embraced a forward-thinking approach by emphasising connection, wellbeing, and innovation in the crucial Middle Years (Years 7 and 8). The change from a Middle School of Years 7 to 9, to a Middle Years structure of Years 7 and 8 may not seem significant, but we believe that this change can help facilitate a range of associated improvements that will ultimately be beneficial to each and every student moving through these crucial years. This holistic approach will be instrumental in shaping well-rounded students who are prepared to thrive in the senior years of their schooling as well as an increasingly complex world.

Building Stronger Connections

One of the foundational pillars of Investigator College’s educational approach is the emphasis on building stronger connections among students, teachers and families. The transition to Years 7 and 8 often marks a significant change for students, moving from primary school to a more structured and diverse secondary school environment. Fostering connections during this time can lead to several advantages in student engagement and wellbeing.  In recognition of this, Home Group teachers in Years 7 and 8 will be given additional time with their students to develop relationships through teaching their Home Groups for multiple subjects as well as the time allocated for Home Group lessons. Our Home Groups are important elements of support and stability for students, so the increased time with their Home Group teacher will enable us to continue to develop a supportive school culture that values socio-emotional wellbeing, character development, as well as academic growth.

Approach to Learning

The Middle Years will allow students to be exposed to a variety of learning opportunities across the subjects contained in the Australian Curriculum and beyond. Opportunities in English, Mathematics, Science and HASS, as well as specialist subjects outside of the core offerings, such as Wood Technology, Food Technology, Music, Drama, Media Arts, Digital Technologies and Japanese, provide students a solid foundation in the disciplinary and inter-disciplinary skills required for later studies.

Years 7 and 8 are also a crucial period for nurturing innovative thinking, collaboration and problem-solving skills. Over the coming years students in the Middle Years will experience a change in approach to teaching and learning in many subject areas. Students will be encouraged and challenged to think differently, be adaptive, and develop the skills required for the modern world.

Improved Transition into the Senior School

The move of Year 9 into the broader Senior School structure will also assist in the smooth transition across the sub-schools. In 2024, Year 9s will still have their Home Group rooms based in what is currently the Middle School building, however, they will have an increased number of lessons in the current Senior building. This will enable a more gradual shift into the Senior building than has previously occurred. It will also provide the College with the opportunity to explore ways to better integrate the learning of Year 9 and 10, ultimately, better preparing students for the senior years of their schooling.

We look forward to these changes and the opportunities it presents our students and the wider Investigator College community.
